City of Rocks: Southern Idaho's World-Class Rock Climbing Destination

People fly from Europe to climb here.

I want you to sit with that for a second.

City of Rocks National Reserve in Cassia County, Idaho — a place that many Magic Valley residents have never visited — is considered one of the premier rock climbing destinations in the United States. Climbers come from Japan, Germany, the UK, Australia. They come because the granite spires and domes at City of Rocks offer climbing routes that simply don't exist anywhere else.

And it's in your backyard. Or close enough.

What Is City of Rocks?

City of Rocks is a landscape of ancient granite formations rising from the high desert in the southern Albion Mountains of Cassia County. The granite here is some of the oldest exposed rock in North America — 2.5 billion years old in some formations. Over millions of years, weathering has sculpted the rock into spires, balanced boulders, and domes that from a distance look like the skyline of a ruined city.

Hence the name.

The Oregon Trail passed directly through City of Rocks, and emigrants carved their names into the rock with axle grease — some of those inscriptions are still visible today, nearly 200 years later.

For Climbers

Over 600 bolted and traditional routes ranging from beginner to extreme. The granite is high-quality — solid, featured, with excellent friction. The elevation (about 6,000 feet) keeps temperatures moderate even in summer.

Peak climbing season is May through October. Spring and fall are preferred by serious climbers for the temperature and light.

Here's the thing about City of Rocks: you do not have to be a climber to love it. The hiking is excellent. The photography is extraordinary. The camping under the granite spires, with the stars overhead and the desert silent around you, is one of the great experiences of Southern Idaho.

Getting There

From Twin Falls, take Highway 30 east to Burley, then south on Highway 27 through Oakley to Almo. Total drive: about 90 minutes. The roads are paved to the reserve boundary.

Cassia County's Hidden Value

Burley is the county seat of Cassia County and one of the most underrated small cities in Southern Idaho. Affordable homes, access to the Snake River, proximity to City of Rocks, and the annual hydroplane races that draw competitors from across the country.

If you're looking for value in Magic Valley and you haven't considered Cassia County — you're missing something.
