My First Drive to Boise: What Two Hours of Idaho Highway Teaches You

Two weeks after moving to Idaho, my new job sent me on a road trip to Boise.

I still needed GPS just to get out of our town — hadn't memorized the roads yet. But once I hit the main highway, something shifted.

Two Hours of Thinking

The drive to Boise from Magic Valley is about two hours, give or take. Traffic on the highway was nothing — nothing like Phoenix rush hour, nothing like the white-knuckle stretches I'd navigated for years in Arizona. More like a relaxed college town pulse as I got closer to the capital.

Here's the thing about long drives by yourself in a place like Idaho: you get time to think. Real, uninterrupted thinking time. When your house has nine family members in it, that kind of quiet is a rare gift.

I drove and I thought and I looked at the landscape and I realized something: I wasn't tense. For the first time in years, I wasn't bracing for traffic or noise or the next thing. I was just driving through a beautiful state on a clear day.

Boise Is a City That Doesn't Try Too Hard

Boise was busy but not frantic. The streets had traffic, but the energy was human-scaled. I looked for a few of my old favorite restaurants — didn't find them — settled for Subway, ate it in the car, and headed home.

On the way back I took a picture of a sign that summed up the whole trip. Two hours of Idaho highway. Two hours of peace. That was my commute to a work meeting.

Cassia County to Boise Is a Different Kind of Distance

In Cassia County and throughout Magic Valley, distance works differently than it does in a metro area. Two hours to the capital is a day trip, not a grind. The space between places here is part of what makes the places worth living in.
