Grandma's homemade noodle soup was one of those. Rolling out the dough by hand, cutting the noodles, letting them dry on the counter before they went into the broth — it was a process that required time and patience and attention. It was the opposite of fast food. It was the opposite of giving up.

What We Were Coming Through

Our family had been through a house fire. We'd lost the Orange Jeep. We'd faced more setbacks in a short stretch than most families face in a decade. I won't catalogue all of it — some things are easier to move past than to revisit — but I will say this: the answer, every time, was to focus on the future and keep our hands busy.

So I made noodles.

I'd been perfecting Grandma's recipe for years, cutting the noodles thicker and experimenting with different broths. That day I cut them even larger, experimenting with lasagna-width noodles. My wife baked the first completely homemade lasagna we'd ever made — noodles, sauce, filling, all from scratch.
