Hiking Southern Idaho: The Trails Within an Hour of Twin Falls That Most People Miss
Here's the hiking situation in Magic Valley that surprises most newcomers.
People assume you have to drive north to the mountains to find worthwhile trails. You don't. Within an hour of Twin Falls, there are hikes that range from easy canyon walks to serious desert elevation gains — and most of them see a fraction of the traffic that the famous Idaho trail destinations get.
I've hiked most of these personally. Here's what's worth your time.
Snake River Canyon Rim Trail (Twin Falls County)
Distance: Varies — the rim trail can be walked in sections from 1 mile to 8+ miles Difficulty: Easy to moderate — flat rim walking with canyon views What you get: Unobstructed views 400 feet down into the Snake River Canyon, Shoshone Falls visible from certain sections, the Perrine Bridge from the rim perspective
This is the hike I take visitors on first. It requires no special gear, no trailhead fee, and delivers canyon views that compete with anything in the American West. The south rim from the Centennial Park area west toward the canyon provides the best continuous viewing.
Shoshone Falls Trail (Twin Falls County)
Distance: Short — under a mile round trip to the main falls overlook Difficulty: Easy What you get: The "Niagara of the West" — 212 feet tall, wider than Niagara at high water. Spring is the season for maximum flow.
Admission fee applies (nominal — under $5 per vehicle at time of writing). Worth every penny in April and May when the falls are running full.
Balanced Rock Trail (Gooding County)
Distance: Under 1 mile round trip Difficulty: Easy What you get: A 40-foot tall, 48-ton rhyolite boulder balanced on a base that's less than 3 feet across. One of the most photographed geological formations in Idaho, in the middle of Gooding County desert.
Combine with a sunset visit for photography that genuinely doesn't look real.
City of Rocks (Cassia County)
Distance: Multiple trails, 1-10+ miles Difficulty: Easy to strenuous depending on route What you get: A valley full of granite monoliths up to 2.5 billion years old, Oregon Trail emigrant inscriptions still visible on the rock faces, world-class rock climbing, and one of the most unusual landscapes in Idaho
About 90 minutes from Twin Falls. Worth making a full day of it.
Malad Gorge State Park (Gooding County)
Distance: 1-3 miles of rim walking Difficulty: Easy What you get: A miniature version of the Snake River Canyon — the Malad River has cut a dramatic gorge through the basalt, complete with a 60-foot waterfall visible from a footbridge
One of the most undervisited state parks in Idaho. Combine with a Thousand Springs visit for a full Gooding County outdoor day.
The Real Estate Angle
Trail access is something I pay attention to when I work with buyers who are active outdoors. Twin Falls County properties close to the canyon rim provide walking access to some of the best hiking in the region without even getting in a car.
For buyers who want more dramatic terrain — mountain hiking, forest trails — Jerome and Gooding county properties to the north put you within range of the Bennett Hills and the broader transition zone between the Snake River Plain and the mountain ranges to the north.
