Kayaking Cassia County: The Snake River from Burley to the Murtaugh Stretch

Most people don't think of Burley as a kayaking destination. That's exactly why it's so good.

Cassia County sits at the eastern end of Magic Valley, where the Snake River widens, slows, and takes on a different character than the canyon sections farther west. This is big water — broad and powerful — with dramatic views of the Albion Mountain Range in the distance and almost no crowds.

Here's the thing about Cassia County: it's where the Snake River becomes a working river. Irrigation infrastructure, historic bridges, farmland right to the bank. It's a different kind of beautiful — more raw, more honest.

The Murtaugh Stretch

Stop what you're doing if you haven't heard of the Murtaugh stretch. This section of the Snake River between Murtaugh and Hansen is classified as Class III–IV in high water and is one of the most exciting whitewater runs in the region. It draws kayakers from across the Pacific Northwest.

For flatwater paddlers, the sections above and below the Murtaugh stretch offer calm conditions and excellent wildlife viewing. Great blue herons, white pelicans, and osprey are common sightings.

Burley Boat Racing

Every summer, Burley hosts hydroplane races on the Snake River that draw competitors and spectators from across the country. If you want to see the river at its most festive, come race weekend. If you want to see it at its most peaceful, come any other weekend.

Getting on the Water in Cassia County

Access points near Burley include the city boat ramp off the river road, and several informal put-ins along Highway 30. Water levels are more stable here than in the upper canyon sections.
