Kayaking Gooding County: The Hagerman Valley and Thousand Springs
If you drove through Hagerman on Highway 30 and thought "that looks pretty from the car," you have absolutely no idea.
You need to see it from the water.
Gooding County's Hagerman Valley is the stretch of the Snake River where the aquifer that runs beneath the entire Snake River Plain meets the canyon wall — and the result is hundreds of springs emerging directly from the basalt cliff face, pouring into the river below. It's unlike anything else in Idaho. Maybe unlike anything else in the United States.
Here's the thing: the only way to truly experience Thousand Springs is by kayak.
Paddling the Hagerman Valley
The Hagerman Valley stretch runs roughly 15 miles through Gooding County. The water here is spring-fed, which means it maintains a remarkably consistent temperature and clarity year-round. In many sections you can see the bottom at 10+ feet of depth.
The springs emerge from the canyon wall at various heights — some as roaring cascades, others as quiet seeps that create hanging gardens of watercress and fern on the basalt face. Kayaking slowly along the wall and watching the water literally come out of the rock is one of the most meditative experiences I've had outdoors.
Access Points
Several Oregon Trail sites along the valley have water access. Ritter Island, now part of the Thousand Springs State Park system, offers a launch point with parking. The Billingsley Creek access provides another option farther downstream.
What to Expect
The Hagerman Valley is mostly flatwater with some mild current. Wind can be a factor in the afternoon — launch early. The canyon walls here are lower than in Twin Falls, which means more sun exposure and warmer conditions.
Real Estate in Gooding County
Hagerman is one of the most unique small towns in Southern Idaho. Property here is different — small farms, river frontage, the old fish hatchery infrastructure. If you're looking for something truly special in Gooding County, I'd love to show you what's available.
