Moving Day Chaos: Snowstorms, a Shredded Tire, and How We Finally Made It to Idaho

Every family moving to a new state has a story. This is ours.

We had packed everything — every bed, every box, every item from every cabinet — into the moving trailer. All of it locked up. Only the moving company had the keys.

Then Flagstaff got 13 inches of snow overnight.

Stranded Without Our Stuff

We were stuck in a house with nine people and nothing to sleep on, nothing to cook with, and no access to any of it. A neighbor took us in for the night. The next morning, we loaded up and headed west.

About an hour out of Flagstaff, Interstate 40 was completely shut down. We tried Route 66. Also shut down westbound.

I turned both vehicles around, retraced our route, found a different way, and added three hours to an already exhausting drive.

US-89 After Dark: The Shredded Tire

We were just north of the Utah border on US-89, in the dark, when the trailer tire went. Not a flat — shredded. Rim damaged. No spare.

Nine people on the side of a dark highway in the desert. Roadside assistance 45 minutes out. I sat there in the quiet dark with the kids watching a movie on the portable DVD player and thought: we are going to make it to Idaho.

We rolled into our new driveway around 8pm the following day. Two days of driving. Three states. One snowstorm, one highway shutdown, and one destroyed tire.

Why It Was Worth Every Bit of It

I want you to know this story because the move to Twin Falls County is not always smooth. But the life on the other side of it is everything we hoped it would be and more.

If you're planning your own move to Magic Valley, I'm Dr. Ron Jones — and I've been where you are. Let's talk about making your arrival a lot smoother than mine.
