How to Pack for a Cross-Country Homestead Move: Tips from a Family of Nine

When you move nine people across multiple states, packing stops being about boxes and starts being about survival strategy.

We learned this the hard way. Our semi-trailer arrived ten days after we did. Ten days in a new house in a new state with nothing but what we could fit in the vehicles.

Tip #1: Pack Like You're Going on a Two-Week Vacation

This is the single most important thing I can tell you.

If you're not driving your own moving truck, assume your belongings won't arrive for at least a week. Maybe two. Pack a dedicated suitcase for every family member with work clothes, church clothes, play clothes, and daily essentials — as if you were leaving for a trip and wouldn't have access to your closet.

Toiletries, medications, a few days of shelf-stable snacks, the kids' favorite comfort items. All of it in the vehicle with you, not in the trailer.

Tip #2: Bring an Enclosed Trailer If You Can

We towed an 8x10 enclosed trailer behind one of our vehicles. About 60% of it was my portable workshop — tools I knew I'd need immediately. The rest carried the items we couldn't afford to be without for ten days.

That trailer was worth more than its weight in peace of mind.

Tip #3: Color-Code the Boxes

My wife used patterned duct tape to color-code every box before loading: bacon-and-eggs tape for the kitchen, polka dots for the master bedroom, zigzag for the kids' room. Anyone helping unload could route boxes without asking.
