Small Game and Upland Birds: A Hunter's Guide to Gooding County's Hidden Opportunities

Every hunter in Magic Valley knows about the pheasants in Jerome County and the deer in the Snake River Canyon. Far fewer talk about what Gooding County offers for small game and upland birds — and that's exactly why it's worth talking about.

Chukar on the Lava Rock Slopes

Stop what you're doing if you've never hunted chukar in Idaho. This is one of the most physically demanding and addictive forms of upland hunting on the planet.

Chukar partridge live on the steep, rocky, lava-covered slopes that define much of Gooding County's terrain along the Snake River canyon system. They run uphill when pressured — always uphill — which means hunting them requires conditioning, a good dog, and a tolerance for terrain that will humble you every time.

The reward is a bird that flushes hard and fast and is genuinely delicious on the table. Gooding County's canyon walls and lava bench country hold chukar from October through February.

Hungarian Partridge in the Grain Edges

Where Gooding County's agricultural fields meet sagebrush and grass edges, you'll find coveys of Hungarian partridge — "Huns" — feeding and loafing through the fall and winter months. These birds hold well for a pointing dog and offer fast, challenging shooting when they flush.

Cottontails and Jackrabbits

For hunters who want action year-round, cottontail rabbits are abundant in the brushy draws and canal banks of Gooding County. A .22 rifle, a good dog, and a cold January morning — it's one of the most honest, old-fashioned hunts there is.

I taught my daughters to shoot on metal plate targets at a remote location just like the terrain in Gooding County. Teaching kids to handle firearms safely and then putting them to work on small game is one of the best things rural Idaho living makes possible.
