The Snake River Canyon 4-Mile Float: A Complete Paddler's Guide

If you only do one kayak trip in Southern Idaho, make it this one.

The 4-mile flatwater float through the Snake River Canyon — launching from Centennial Waterfront Park and taking out downstream — is the perfect introduction to canyon paddling. It's calm enough for beginners, long enough to feel like an adventure, and dramatic enough that you'll be talking about it for weeks.

Here's everything you need to know before you go.

The Route

Put-in: Centennial Waterfront Park, Twin Falls (off Addison Ave West) Take-out: Coordinates vary by water level — the most common downstream take-out is near the Murtaugh bridge area, roughly 4 miles east Difficulty: Class I flatwater — beginner friendly Time: 2–3 hours at a relaxed pace Best season: May through October

What You'll Paddle Through

The first mile takes you through the heart of the canyon directly beneath the Perrine Bridge. Look up — you'll see the bridge deck 486 feet overhead, and if you're lucky, a base jumper in freefall before their chute opens.

Mile two opens into a wider section where the canyon walls step back slightly and the river bends. Spring-fed seeps create small waterfalls along the north wall — look for the bright green vegetation growing where water meets basalt.

Miles three and four move through quieter, more remote-feeling terrain. Eagles nest in this section. Mule deer come to the bank to drink in the early morning. In fall, the canyon feels like another world.

Here's the thing about this float: once you're in the canyon, the city disappears entirely. No roads visible, no noise. Just you, the river, and 500-foot walls of ancient volcanic rock.

Logistics

This is a one-way float, so you'll need two vehicles or a shuttle. Pro tip: leave one car at the take-out before you drive to the put-in.

The Real Estate Angle

I get asked constantly: "Is Twin Falls a good place to live?" My answer is always this float. Come see what the lifestyle looks like from the water, and then let's talk about neighborhoods.
