I almost did it. I nearly called that fancy restaurant in town and dropped $120 on a Valentine's dinner for two — not counting the tip.

Then I stopped and thought about what that money could actually do for our family.

What We Did Instead

I woke up early and cleaned the bathrooms — both of them. Not because anyone told me to. Because I knew my wife had been hauling water, managing chickens, and keeping six kids fed and happy all week. Cleaning that bathroom was a love letter she could actually feel.

Then I made pink pancakes on Valentine's Day paper plates. The kids thought it was the greatest thing I'd ever done. Honestly? So did I.

We bought roses from Costco for $15. We ate together at our own table. We didn't need a hostess or a prix fixe menu to feel like a family that loves each other.
