What to Bring Kayaking the Snake River Canyon: The Complete Gear List

I see it every summer. Someone shows up at Centennial Waterfront Park with a brand new inflatable kayak, no PFD, flip flops, and a single water bottle for a 4-hour float in 95-degree heat.

Don't be that person. Here's what to actually bring.

The Non-Negotiables

PFD (Life Jacket): Required by law on Idaho waterways. Wear it — don't just have it on the boat. The Snake River looks calm but the current is deceptive.

Sun protection: The canyon walls reflect heat. Sunscreen, hat with a brim, and UV-blocking clothing. The canyon can feel like a solar oven in July and August.

Water — more than you think: Bring at least 2 liters per person for a half-day float. 3 liters for a full day.

Dry bag: Your phone, keys, and wallet need to be waterproof. Period.

The Smart Additions

Wetsuit or drysuit in spring/fall: Water temps in the Snake can be 45–55°F even when air temps are warm. Cold shock is real.

Kayak anchor or stake-out pole: Lets you hold position to photograph wildlife or just drift and eat lunch.

First aid kit: Nothing elaborate — bandages, moleskin, ibuprofen, and a SAM splint.

Whistle: Attach it to your PFD. Required safety equipment.

Waterproof camera or phone mount: You will want to photograph this canyon. Make sure your camera survives the trip.

What NOT to Bring

  • Glass bottles (illegal on many Idaho waterways)
  • Anything you can't afford to lose to the river
  • A drone without checking current FAA and BLM rules for the canyon

Here's the bottom line: the Snake River Canyon is one of the most beautiful places in Idaho. Prepare properly and it's an incredible experience. Underprepare and it can be dangerous.

Local Knowledge

As someone who's paddled this canyon dozens of times, I'm always happy to answer questions about conditions, access, or timing. And if you ever want to talk about what it's like to LIVE near this river year-round, that's my specialty.
